You’re Not Alone in This Conversation

WHY THESE CONVERSATIONS MATTER

  • 1 in 5 children ages 10–17 have been contacted by an online predator.

  • 37% of U.S. teens report experiencing cyberbullying

  • Nearly half of teens report being threatened, harassed, or sent explicit images online.

  • About 70% of children ages 8–18 are expected to encounter at least one online risk.

  • More than half of children contacted by predators never tell their parents.

  • Over 50% of children receive their first smartphone by age 11, often before parents have established clear online safety boundaries.

Conversation Starters

Ask your kids these questions:

“What apps or games are most popular with your friends right now? Are their any that parents may not know about?”

“If you saw something online that made you uncomfortable, would you feel okay telling me?”

“Has anyone online ever made you feel uncomfortable or asked you something weird?”

“Do kids ever pretend to be someone else online?”

A Reminder for Parents

The goal isn’t to control every digital interaction—it’s to build trust so your child knows they can come to you when something doesn’t feel right.

Small conversations today can prevent bigger problems tomorrow.
